President's Message

The Dog Days of Summer are upon us. And we still have this doggone coronavirus to deal with. One requires us to stay hydrated, the other to stay masked and socially distanced. Yet, I am hearing and seeing that SCU-er's are still out there on their bikes racking up the miles and gathering up the smiles. Some of us are out on club rides following the mitigation measures, others are riding only with a small group of friends and there are those that are continuing to ride solo or only with spouses or others in their household. We are all being careful to avoid giving or getting the virus in our own way. We've also had some fun virtual events so far this season: The Socially Distanced Quad, the Scavenger Hunt and the Photo Contest, which just finished up at the end of last month. Perhaps this Fall we'll have some more. If you have any ideas, please share them with me or any Executive Committee member.

There have been a rash of cycling deaths in the Philly area. It's not our place to pass judgement on either the riders or the drivers involved, but that doesn't mean we can't use these tragedies as reminders to take steps to reduce the risk of sharing the road with masses of steel and plastic that outweigh us by a factor of ten or more. Using front and rear blinkies, especially at dawn and dusk, helps us be seen. Riding in a steady and predictable manner helps drivers maneuver safely around us. Staying to the right except when we need to 'take the lane' encourages drivers to be patient then pass safely. Stopping to wait for your friend while they cross a busy intersection helps them avoid the temptation to cross before it's safe. Overall, we must ride defensively at all times. Taking risks in traffic is just plain foolish and has no glory in it. The only podium position for reckless riding is in a box.

So, enjoy the peak of Summer riding, but please be careful of both virus and traffic at all times. Hope to see you out on a ride soon!

Steve "Live to wimp again!" Muth

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU will continue to practice the Mitigation Measures (found here: https://suburbancyclists.org/docs.ashx?id=636920) . The virus is not gone, and we need continued vigilance to prevent a resurgence and a retreat to greater restrictions.  Thank you to all members and ride leaders who continue to act responsibly!

College Settlement Camp

10,706 Kilometer Challenge

College Settlement camp sign

As many of you know, SCU has been a long-standing supporter of The College Settlement Camp in Horsham.  SCU supports the Camp through donations from proceeds of the Quad and has partnered with The College Settlement Camp in various events..

This year, a group of Summer Camp staff from all over the world are raising funds to help the Camp continue to provide on-line and on-site programs to campers and their families this summer even though Camp has been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.

This group has challenged themselves to collectively walk, run, cycle and jog the total distance from Edinburgh, Scotland to College Settlement Camp and back, 10,706 km. They are off to an amazing start!

You can make a donation to support them here:

A Tribute by Jim Howat
4th of July Ride
Jim Howat

It was July 4th, Independence Day
Awesome biking weather came our way
I joined Linda, Joanne, Jeff, and Stan
A 42 mile bike ride was the plan
We gathered together at UDHS, we took off at 9
Everyone was feeling fine
We pedaled our way through Montgomery and Bucks scenery
We got a good workout, we sweated profusely
Our trip included a stop at WaWa in Jamison
The need for reinforcements was quite a good reason
We enjoyed each others company, we were a good team
After the ride, we went to Sweet Briar for some ice cream
We enjoyed our treats, paid for by Stan
Thanks so much!  You are the man!
The celebration of the 4th is a big highlight of summer
Many celebrations were eliminated, that is indeed a bummer
Many of us got out on our bike
And found out later that Covid cases did spike
We need to enjoy life, we need to have fun
But the battle with Covid is far from done
When it comes to slowing the spread, it is a very small task
To maintain social distance and wear a mask
Enjoy the remainder of summer, let us stay strong
Hopefully this pandemic will end before too long!
