President's Message

Some may lament the passing of the warm Summer weather and the approach of Winter's cold heart. But the change of the seasons is what keeps us fresh. It is an eternal cycle of one door closing and another door opening. It is the changing fall foliage that makes October the most spectacular month to ride. The scenery changes from week to week. The cool temps make for comfortable climbs to scenic outlooks. The descents become a kaleidoscopic light show of all shades of yellows and reds. But watch out for those wet leaves!

Exciting things are happening in the club this month. On Monday, a small group of members were interviewed and videoed for a spot about club cycling on the WHYY program You Oughta Know. This program is a guide to people, places and events in the Philadelphia area. We'll release details about when it airs as they become available. Also, this month's Chainletter has the Who is That Masked Rider game, a way to 'make lemonade out of Covid lemons'. See details further below. Lastly, many of our outstanding rider leaders are continuing to lead Covid-safe rides throughout the Delaware Valley. Check out the ride calendar on Meetup.

There have been a lot of questions about the Quad. Yes, the club intends to hold it next year. The format, rest stops and routes may need to be adapted to whatever the Covid situation is at the time. An alternate start location may need to be found if Green Lane Park is unable to issue permits. However, the both Executive and Quad Committees are committed to doing everything possible to make this event happen. Everyone knows a lot more about how to cope with Covid than we did this past May. So, I am very optimistic that we will hold a successful event in 2021. Keep your fingers crossed for good luck anyway.

So, grab your arm warmers and get out there for some awesome October rides. And don't forget your mask for when you stop somewhere for hot apple cider!

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU will continue to practice the Mitigation Measures (found here: https://suburbancyclists.org/docs.ashx?id=636920) . The virus is not gone, and we need continued vigilance to prevent a resurgence and a retreat to greater restrictions.  Thank you to all members and ride leaders who continue to act responsibly!

SCU Executive Committee Positions for 2020

It’s time to think about SCU in 2021 and how you might want to contribute by becoming a member of our illustrious Executive Committee (EC).  Elections are coming up in December 2020, and now is the time to start thinking about filling those positions!!

The current SCU Executive Committee, is comprised of the following members including President (Steve Muth), Treasurer (Dave Kaplan), Secretary (Marc Katz), Ride Director (Curtis Schwartz), Safety & Legislation Director (Jay Sitkin), Signature Events Director (Chuck Herbert), Social Events Director (Judith Pyle), Public Relations Director (Linda McGrane), Membership Director (Robin Einhorn), Digital Communications Director (Amy Brumbaugh), and Information Technology Director (Scott Siegfried).  The EC is elected to these positions by the membership and serves for a minimum of one (1) year terms.  Candidates can be self-nominated or the EC can solicit nominees.  Every year all EC positions are open for anyone with the drive and interest to help the Club, and this year is no different.  The only requirement to being on the EC is that you be a member in good standing (per the SCU Bylaws) for at least 60 days prior to the publication of your biographical submission (which will occur in November 2020).  The President must also have prior EC service as defined and stipulated in the SCU Bylaws.  So, if you have the desire and some good ideas to share, now is the time to step forward and be a “cog” in the SCU wheel!  If you are unsure as to what duties the position may entail, feel free to contact me or any of the current EC members!  Like all good wheel sucking vampires, we thrive on “new blood”, and will be eager to mentor you into any one of these new roles for your Club!

I’ll be coordinating any interest, so any prospective nominees/volunteers can contact me at jeffbicycle@comcast.net.  Whether you are an existing EC member and would like to consider another year in your current position or are an SCU member in good standing and want to throw your hat into the ring for a new position, please contact me.  Note that anyone expressing an interest (including repeat “offenders”) should provide a brief “bio” and picture to me with the EC position of interest, qualifications, plus any pertinent background info prior to October 15, 2020.  All such bio information for each position nominee will then be posted for the membership to view.  The elections will be held in early December.  Election details will be provided in a separate announcement.

Thank you for your consideration and interest in SCU!

Jeff Kochanowicz
SCU Election Coordinator (2021 EC Election)

Who is that Masked Rider?

No, it's not the Lone Ranger. Nor is it the Dread Pirate Roberts. It's an SCU member you may or may not recognize! And we're going to have some fun with this.

Send in a photo of yourself or a member friend wearing a Covid mask (with their permission, of course). Photos may be while actually riding, or they may be at the start, finish or rest stop of a ride. Photos should clearly show the rider's masked face. Members sending in photos will be entered in a drawing to win a $20 Wawa gift card.

Next, we'll publish the photos without names and ask members to identify the masked riders. Those correctly identifying all riders will be entered in a second drawing for another $20 Wawa gift card. The names of all the masked riders and drawing winners will be revealed in a special announcement.

To enter, please submit your photos of masked riders by midnight October 18 to communications@suburbancyclists.org.  Please include your full name and the full name of the masked rider.  One entry per member, please. If nobody correctly identifies all masked riders, the best 'score' wins. Any ties will be settled by a drawing or other random selection.

Free to all club members who are eligible to enter.  For non-members, if you would like to participate, please visit our SCU website and become a member by clicking here.

Joe Landis Memorial Ride

On September 13th, members of SCU and CBBC met and rode to remember longtime SCU member Joe Landis on what would have been his birthday.  Joe passed away on May 24, 2020.  The 33-mile ride included some of Joe’s favorite roads through Bucks County.  The group gathered to enjoy some snacks while they shared stories and memories of Joe.  See pictures below for the event (thanks to Joe Phelps for the beautiful pictures).

SCU to be on the Tube

Here are some 'sneak preview' photos of the SCU riders participating in the filming of a segment on Fall cycling for You Oughta Know, a WHYY program about people, places and events in the Philadelphia area. SCU member Maryann Bakey connected SCU with Lisa Gray, one of the producers for the program. On hand were Executive Committee Members Linda McGrane, Steve Muth and Curtis Schwartz. SCU members riding for the camera were Hayley Chamberlain, John Dwyer, Rai Gundermann, John Piergallini, Mark Sammon, Bryce Uytiepo, and Greg Vaeth. Hayley even got to wear the GoPro for the ride. You Oughta Know airs Thursdays at 7 pm on WHYY. The exact date of the Fall cycling episode will be announced when it becomes available.
