Vol 34 l No 11 l November 2020 | |
The last day of October brought frost on the Halloween pumpkin and the first day of riding in thermal tights. The following day, the first of November, brought the "fall back" to standard time. Next weekend SCU and BCP start our jointly sponsored Sunday hikes in the Wissahickon. The leaves are almost all off the trees leaving the woods bare and bark gray. In a variety of ways, this month marks the start of cold weather riding. For some this means more layers of clothing and frequent warming stops, for others it means a change in venue to hiking or indoor cycling. But whether it's on the road, on the trail or on Zwift, there are plenty of opportunities for members to get together and enjoy each other's company.
By now I hope everyone has had a chance to see our spot on WHYY's You Oughta Know. If not, here is a link to it. I am expecting a renewed interest in club cycling in the Spring as people who discovered cycling this summer look to expand their horizons. Hopefully, this will bring new members for our club. New members bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the club. Long time members enjoy sharing their experience and expertise. It's a win-win. If you know someone who has recently taken up biking (or hiking), please invite them to join you on a club outing to get to know us better.
The Annual Elections are coming up. Just as with the general election the key message is Please Vote. Even in uncontested elections, your vote lets your club's leadership know you care about the club's future. Reading the candidates "Biographies" keeps you in touch with the people making decisions for the benefit of the club. This is more important than ever as Covid-19 challenges them to serve the membership in new ways. And voting couldn't be easier with the online voting process.
I cannot write this month's message without expressing sadness over the passing of Pat Rock. She and her husband, Bill, were active members for many years. They were a colorful and energetic couple that brought joy to every ride and event they attended. Bill passed away a couple of years ago and Pat on October 3. They will be missed by me and all the others whose lives they enriched. We can honor them best by getting out and making the most of every moment life has to offer.
Keep warm, keep safe and keep together,
Steve "A Man for All Seasons" Muth

Thomas Mcadams
League Certified Instructor
| Congratulations to SCU member Thomas Mcadams for obtaining the League of American Bicyclists certification as a League Certified Instructor (LCI)!
League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are ambassadors for better biking through education. After earning certification through a 3-day, League Coach-led seminar, LCIs teach Smart Cycling classes to children as well as adults. Their goal is to help people feel more secure about getting on a bike, to create a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and to ensure that people on bikes know how to ride safely and legally. A Tribute to Pat Rock
by Jim Howat
| | Here’s a tribute to our friend Pat Rock
Her love for life, family, and friends was a lock
Her kind heart, her sweet smile
Made being around her all worth while
In October 2020, day number 3
Her life on earth was no longer to be
She loved to go biking, she was on many a ride
She was good company for all of us, cycling side by side
When at a bike club social, we enjoyed her company
She lived life to the fullest, the way it was meant to be
It is with hope and that by God’s Grace
That she is in a better place
Unto us our earthly life must die
But then to be raised up by the King on High
The gift of salvation is something we could not win
Until Jesus went to the cross to take away our sin
His gift is there for you to receive
Confess, Repent, and Believe
By His death, He has opened Heaven’s door
So, we may enter in forevermore
Let us give thanks to The Lord all of our days
It is right to give Him glory, honor, and praise
Let us exalt Him as our God and King
For the gift of life, hymns of praise let us sing
At the age of 84, Pat departed this earthly place
To enter The Lord’s courts, to seek The Lord’s face
She has lived her life, she has chartered her course
She lived it well, with no remorse
We grieve the loss of Pat, that is true
