President's Message
President's Message May 2021

I think we are beginning to see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, and club cycling is on a path to return to normal.

The new Summer Century is starting to take shape and become a reality. We have a terrific start location at the Shrine of Czestochowa, which is very near Peace Valley Park. If you haven't ridden through its parking lot on a ride, you've probably seen the steeple that is visible for miles around. The routes include some of the most scenic and quiet roads of upper Bucks County. And there will be ice cream at the finish line! Mark your calendar: Saturday, June 19. There's even an opportunity to earn a free registration. Details are in an article below.

Our awesome ride leaders are posting more and more rides, both regular weeknight rides and weekend destination rides. New CDC guidelines have been issued, relaxing measures for outdoor gatherings. More people are getting vaccinated and becoming more comfortable with group rides. There are still a few ride start locations that have not re-opened, but all members should be able to find a ride near them at a pace they enjoy.

Speaking of members, membership is starting to rise again. Current members are renewing as they return to group riding. New membership is also growing as more people have discovered the joy of cycling, and are looking for an opportunity to expand their horizons. Thom McAdams deserves a shout-out for starting a series of Safety on the Trails events as well as beginner rides.

The annual outdoor picnic is back and being planned for mid-August. We are hoping to hold it the same terrific location, the campus of College Settlement Camp. Of course, there will also be rides starting and ending at the picnic. Look for more details in this and upcoming issues of the Chainletter. It will be nice to gather as a whole club again.

Hope to see you on a ride or at an event soon.

Steve "Storms don't last forever" Muth

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU will continue to practice the Mitigation Measures (found here: https://suburbancyclists.org/docs.ashx?id=636920) . The virus is not gone, and we need continued vigilance to prevent a resurgence and a retreat to greater restrictions.  Thank you to all members and ride leaders who continue to act responsibly!

Roll, Stroll, and Run - SAG Drivers Needed

Indian Creek Foundation is holding its annual Roll, Stroll and Run on Saturday, June 19, their largest fundraiser and wonderful community event. Indian Creek Foundation is located in Souderton, and their mission is serving the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The biking portion includes routes of 10, 20, 40 and 62 miles.

They have approached SCU for help in finding SAG drivers. They will offer $5.00 discount on registration to all SCU members in return for providing two SAG drivers. To recognize these volunteers, SCU will offer free transferable registration to the new Summer Century on Saturday, August 21.

This is your chance to score a win-win-win! By volunteering you will be helping Indian Creek Foundation with their mission, helping your fellow SCU members get a discount to a terrific ride, and earning a free registration for yourself to a our own awesome ride later in the season. Plus, if you send us a photo of your participation, it will be published here in the Chainletter.

Here are some details: The first two volunteers to send an email to president@suburbancyclists.com will be selected. Later respondents will be put on a wait list. Drivers must be over age 18, have their own vehicle capable of transporting a bike, and be willing to wear a mask while transporting riders. A willingness to assist with minor repairs such as changing flats is also helpful, but drivers will not be expected to serve as bike mechanics.

From Our Friends at Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP): BCP Spring Weekend in Danville, PA

BCP’s annual Spring-n2-Cycling Weekend in Danville, PA will take place May 21-23. The Spring Weekend is an all-inclusive, 3-day (Friday to Sunday) package of hotel stay, rides with leaders, a wide array of cycling routes for distances from 15 to 75+ miles, meals, parties, snacks, live music, SAG, and more. Quaint Danville is the county seat of Montour County, two and a half hours north of Philadelphia, in the green and peaceful Susquehanna Valley. Danville is between the charming (and bike-friendly) college towns of Bloomsburg and Lewisburg.

The pastoral countryside between towns is scenic, with covered bridges and Amish farms. For COVID precautions, the gatherings will all be outdoors for safer distancing. You will be able to set up tents on the hotel’s rear lawn. In addition to cycling, the Danville region offers plenty of recreational and sightseeing activities for cyclist guests traveling with non-cyclist companions or families. The hotel is 9 miles from the Montour Preserve, the perfect setting for nature walks or hikes, birding, boating, etc. Knoebels Amusement Park is 15 miles from the hotel, and there will be a Blues Festival with music, food & crafts on Saturday, May 22 in Mifflinburg, which is close to the restaurant where we dine on Saturday night. Please contact Linda McGrane, Mcgrane_linda_a@yahoo.com for more information on the Spring Weekend. Event details and registration are posted at: BCPWeekends.org.
