President's Message
President's Message July 2021

There are more details and photos below, but I just have to say my heart soared like an eagle to see members having such a good time at our first-ever Round Up ride. I felt like we had a regular gathering of the clan. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that Covid continues to recede as a factor in our cycling and our daily lives.

July is always a hot month, but it gives us plenty of daylight for evening rides. It can get quite hot on the weekend rides, even if we start early in the day. Drink your fluids. Have a snack or drink with electrolytes. Moderate your pace according to the temperature. Hot weather is a great excuse to stop for ice cream or water ice. If you want a special treat, make the trek to Bauman's in Sassamansville for an apple cider slushie. It's only about a half an hour ride from Green Lane Park.

There have been some changes on the Executive Committee. Dina Adams has stepped down as Secretary, with our gratitude for her service to the club. My spouse and 'most trusted advisor', Helen Muth, has been appointed by the EC to serve as interim Secretary until a long-term replacement can be found. Also, yours truly will be departing Oregon on July 15 for a three month cross-country bike tour. While I am away I will keep abreast of club matters via the EC and will continue conducting meetings via Zoom. However, I may not have wifi or wireless at all times. Please be patient if you send me a text or email.

Sadly, I will be missing our Summer Century. (Another first-ever event!) However, it is in the capable hands of its Director, Chuck Herbert, and our Century Committee. They have the routes and the start/finish location nailed down. Publicity and food planning is under way. The last count I heard was almost 80 pre-registrations. Rest stop locations have been identified and are in the permitting process. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Robin Einhorn, if you are interested in getting involved with this exciting event. I think the ice cream festival finish will be a big hit. Maybe somebody will save an ice cream cone for me!

Round Up Marc-Robin-Linda
Round Up Ride Brings SCU Members Together Again

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, SCU members were able to gather en masse for biking, socializing, and, of course, eating. The Round-Up ride at Kohler Park of Horsham Township attracted over 90 club members, some long-time members, some new to the club. Riders came either in organized group rides, in smaller informal groups, or individually from Montgomery, Bucks and Chester counties. Riders were treated to an assortment of hoagies delivered from Lee's Hoagies of Horsham, assorted chips, Rita's water ice, and a variety of cold beverages.

Marc Katz, Robin Einhorn and Linda Mueller (all pictured above) deserve kudos for planning, organizing and serving up the goods. Thanks also are due to ride leaders Dean Mondelblatt, Doug Mueller, Howard Hochheiser, Katie Hunt, Linda Mueller, Tom Madle, and Wes Wolf.

Mark your calendars for more fun to come. The annual club picnic is scheduled Saturday, August 14, at College Settlement Camp.

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures  - Updated May 13, 2021

The Covid situation has changed for the better in recent weeks. But we can't ignore the reality that the threat has not yet gone away completely. To reflect this change while remaining vigilant in protecting all members, the Executive Committee has adopted the new guidelines below. Keep in mind that your fellow riders may not have all been vaccinated, some by choice and others by circumstance. We should respect their privacy in this regard. In the absence of vaccination, social distancing and masking remain effective defenses against transmission. Therefore, we are asking all members to follow the new Guidelines to the best of their ability.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.
  • Please stay home or ride solo if you have any Covid symptoms, have tested positive for Covid, or have been recently exposed to someone that has Covid.
  • Bring a mask to wear when social distancing is not possible and for entry into commercial establishments at rest stops.
  • Recommended maximum group size is 15, but the ride leader may restrict groups to less.
  • If you develop Covid symptoms or test positive for Covid within a week of a group ride, please contact the club Ride Director (rides@suburbancyclists.org).
  • Maintain social distance as appropriate. Observe any applicable local, state and federal guidelines and comply with all county Health Department regulations.

As membership director, I want to welcome back all of our SCU members who have renewed their memberships and hoping to encourage our non-members to join our ranks!  We are excited to have over 1,800 cyclists in our Meetup Group but we would be even more excited to have more of the group become dues paying SCU members.  Our membership fee is one of the best bargains around!!  So what are the benefits you will receive with your SCU membership you may ask?

Here are just a few:
  • Insurance coverage if an accident occurs while participating in a SCU ride
  • Access to all SCU events including the SCU picnic, awards banquet, tailgate parties and many more events that occur throughout the year
  • Discounts at designated local bike shops and SCU Century / Summer Event rides
  • Monthly newsletter
And most importantly...supporting our cycling community especially our experienced and dedicated ride leaders who work hard at providing our club members with the best and safest routes throughout the region that accommodates various rider abilities.

The SCU membership fees help to sustain our club so please consider becoming a member today!  To join our club, click https://suburbancyclists.org/.  Please feel free to reach out to me at membership@suburbancyclists.org or any of our Executive Committee if you have any questions or comments.
