President's Message
President's Message August 2021

Even though I was not present, my vast network of spies have informed me that the Summer Century was a success on all fronts. Riders enjoyed themselves on the beautiful roads of Bucks and Hunterdon counties. Member volunteers worked as a team to create something larger than the total of their contributions. And the club made several thousand dollars to boot!

Chuck Herbert and the Century Committee deserve special recognition for putting together a brand new event on short notice in the middle of challenging times. I will leave it to Chuck to recognize all individual contributions on the Committee and the day of the event, which are too numerous to list here.

At this point I think it's safe to say that SCU has weathered the worst of the Covid storm. The pandemic may not be over yet, but this year we have had a resumption of most of the regular weeknight and weekend group rides, we have held a terrific organized ride, and will likely end the year 'back in the black' financially. I think this speaks to the positive attitude of our members and community spirit of the club. Even in the most difficult of times we can come together to share the special joy of cycling with friends.

Shout Out to Tom McAdams - Good Samaritan on the Trail

Shout out to Tom McAdams, truly a man for others, helping on the trail…
Here is how the night unfolded… (as described by Maryann Bakey)
  • John's Dwyer’s ride was divided into two groups tonight, and Tom led the second ride I was on; and the motto is: NO Rider left behind.
  • On our way home just a about a half a mile to Keith Valley, we spotted a young girl on the trail in trouble who was riding alone, and it was getting dark fast. Tom took charge of the situation, was professional, calm, compassionate, and a true leader; organizing the tasks at hand to help free this girl.
  • Believe it or not, this girl had her leg stuck in the spokes and fender. She didn't have a release on the wheel of her bike which made it difficult. Tom, Omar, and Terry were able to free her by taking her bike apart along with a couple of strangers on the trail in the darkness. They managed to free her, notify her parents, and wait for them to pick her up.
  • Tom rode his bike to meet her parents, leading them to her while assuring the girl and her parents on the phone everything would be ok.  The rest of the group walked/hobbled her to the entrance of the trail so she wouldn't have to put weight on her leg and carrying her bike and belongings.  A few scrapes and bruises, but the young girl was ok.
  • If ever I was in trouble, I'd want Tom, Terry, and Omar by my side. (By the way Omar is a new rider and tonight was his second time with us, and he also helped a MTB rider at Lake Nockamixon a few weeks ago who broke their collarbone; def a good Samaritan!)
  • A dog walker who also helped, told me we restored his faith in the world tonight. Yes, there are kind, compassionate people in this world.  We made his night! Talked him into joining our beginner ride.

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures  - Updated May 13, 2021

The Covid situation has changed for the better in recent weeks. But we can't ignore the reality that the threat has not yet gone away completely. To reflect this change while remaining vigilant in protecting all members, the Executive Committee has adopted the new guidelines below. Keep in mind that your fellow riders may not have all been vaccinated, some by choice and others by circumstance. We should respect their privacy in this regard. In the absence of vaccination, social distancing and masking remain effective defenses against transmission. Therefore, we are asking all members to follow the new Guidelines to the best of their ability.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.
  • Please stay home or ride solo if you have any Covid symptoms, have tested positive for Covid, or have been recently exposed to someone that has Covid.
  • Bring a mask to wear when social distancing is not possible and for entry into commercial establishments at rest stops.
  • Recommended maximum group size is 15, but the ride leader may restrict groups to less.
  • If you develop Covid symptoms or test positive for Covid within a week of a group ride, please contact the club Ride Director (rides@suburbancyclists.org).
  • Maintain social distance as appropriate. Observe any applicable local, state and federal guidelines and comply with all county Health Department regulations.

As membership director, I want to welcome back all of our SCU members who have renewed their memberships and hoping to encourage our non-members to join our ranks!  We are excited to have over 1,800 cyclists in our Meetup Group but we would be even more excited to have more of the group become dues paying SCU members.  Our membership fee is one of the best bargains around!!  So what are the benefits you will receive with your SCU membership you may ask?

Here are just a few:
  • Insurance coverage if an accident occurs while participating in a SCU ride
  • Access to all SCU events including the SCU picnic, awards banquet, tailgate parties and many more events that occur throughout the year
  • Discounts at designated local bike shops and SCU Century / Summer Event rides
  • Monthly newsletter
And most importantly...supporting our cycling community especially our experienced and dedicated ride leaders who work hard at providing our club members with the best and safest routes throughout the region that accommodates various rider abilities.

The SCU membership fees help to sustain our club so please consider becoming a member today!  To join our club, click https://suburbancyclists.org/.  Please feel free to reach out to me at membership@suburbancyclists.org or any of our Executive Committee if you have any questions or comments.

Hope to see you on the road!
