President's Message
President's Message August 2021

Fall riding is at its finest in October. The temperatures are comfortably cool, our legs have a summer of riding in them, and the leaves are a kaleidoscope of colors. What better time to get out and enjoy a few hours rolling through the countryside on your bike with friends?

It's also time to start the club's election process with nominations. The specifics are spelled out below by our Elections Coordinator, Jeff Kochanowitz, who is guided by our Bylaws. You can nominate a fellow rider or yourself. Please consider serving on the Executive Committee to be an opportunity to enhance your club riding experience. Service is not only a way to 'give back to the club', but also a chance to make new friendships beyond your regular riding buddies. Involvement in the club leadership also helps you understand and appreciate the diversity of rides and riders within the club, which will expand your own cycling horizons. Every year I have served on the Committee has been a source of personal growth.

All positions are open to all members. Some current Committee members are considering running for re-election and some are planning to step down. Feel free to contact any Committee member to discuss the nature of their role and the future of their position. Such discussions will be welcomed by all and are a normal part of the nomination process.

Hope to see you on a Fall ride soon!

Steve "Every Leaf a Flower" Muth
SCU President

SCU Executive Committee Positions for 2022

It’s time to think about SCU in 2022 and how you might want to contribute by becoming a member of our illustrious Executive Committee (EC). Elections are coming up in December 2021, and now is the time to start thinking about filling those positions!!

The current SCU Executive Committee, is comprised of the following members including President (Steve Muth), Treasurer (Dave Kaplan), Secretary (Helen Muth), Ride Director (Curtis Schwartz), Signature Events Director (Chuck Herbert), Social Director (Marc Katz), Public Relations Director (Linda McGrane), Membership Director (Robin Einhorn), Digital Communications Director (Steve DeLabio), and Information Technology Director (Scott Siegfried).

The EC is elected to these positions by the membership and serves for a minimum of one (1) year terms. Candidates can be self-nominated or the EC can solicit nominees. Every year all EC positions are open for anyone with the drive and interest to help the Club, and this year is no different. The only requirement to being on the EC is that you be a member in good standing (per the SCU Bylaws) for at least 60 days prior to the publication of your biographical submission (which will occur in November 2021). The President must also have prior EC service as defined and stipulated in the SCU Bylaws. So, if you have the desire and some good ideas to share, now is the time to step forward and be a “cog” in the SCU wheel! If you are unsure as to what duties the position may entail, feel free to contact me or any of the current EC members! Like all good wheel sucking vampires, we thrive on “new blood”, and will be eager to mentor you into any one of these new roles for your Club!

I’ll be coordinating any interest, so any prospective nominees/volunteers can contact me at jeffbicycle@comcast.net. Whether you are an existing EC member and would like to consider another year in your current position or are an SCU member in good standing and want to throw your hat into the ring for a new position, please contact me. Note that anyone expressing an interest (including repeat “offenders”) should provide a brief “bio” and picture to me with the EC position of interest, qualifications, plus any pertinent background info prior to October 25, 2021. All such bio information for each position nominee will then be posted for the membership to view. The elections will be held in early December. Election details will be provided in a separate announcement.

Thank you for your consideration and interest in SCU!

Jeff Kochanowicz
SCU Election Coordinator (2022 EC Election)

  • Please note that at the September meeting the Executive Committee voted to continue online balloting and to drop the position of Safety and Legislation Director. These actions are provided for in the club's Bylaws.

SCU Club Member BBQ - Good Time Had By All - Saturday, September 18th

A big thank you to everyone who planned and attended the club BBQ a few weeks ago, over 80 members showed for the festivities.  The weather cooperated perfectly, the food was outstanding, and the before and after rides that left out of College Settlement rolled along wonderfully.

I think Jim Howat captured the day very well in a poem:
  • On the 3rd Saturday in September, day 18 College Settlement Camp was the scene, we got on our bikes and hit the streets. Working up an appetite for a lot of eats, we enjoyed each others company as we put in miles. Seeing each other again brought plenty of smiles It was the last Saturday of Summer, the weather was great, and after 40 miles of biking a picnic did await.
  • After taking on flat roads, descends, and hills we stuffed ourselves to the gills. For all who contributed, you knew your role, helping to make this event a success was your goal; thank you to all who helped in any way, your help really did make our day.
  • As we head into the offseason, let’s continue to use common sense, Covid is still making people very tense, mask up and social distance; good health for everyone means a lot. As the pace slows down, keeping in shape is a must, and avoid winter’s rust. Let us continue to keep in touch, our friendship and camaraderie mean so much.

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures  - Updated May 13, 2021

The Covid situation has changed for the better in recent weeks. But we can't ignore the reality that the threat has not yet gone away completely. To reflect this change while remaining vigilant in protecting all members, the Executive Committee has adopted the new guidelines below. Keep in mind that your fellow riders may not have all been vaccinated, some by choice and others by circumstance. We should respect their privacy in this regard. In the absence of vaccination, social distancing and masking remain effective defenses against transmission. Therefore, we are asking all members to follow the new Guidelines to the best of their ability.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.
  • Please stay home or ride solo if you have any Covid symptoms, have tested positive for Covid, or have been recently exposed to someone that has Covid.
  • Bring a mask to wear when social distancing is not possible and for entry into commercial establishments at rest stops.
  • Recommended maximum group size is 15, but the ride leader may restrict groups to less.
  • If you develop Covid symptoms or test positive for Covid within a week of a group ride, please contact the club Ride Director (rides@suburbancyclists.org).
  • Maintain social distance as appropriate. Observe any applicable local, state and federal guidelines and comply with all county Health Department regulations.

As membership director, I want to welcome back all of our SCU members who have renewed their memberships and hoping to encourage our non-members to join our ranks!  We are excited to have over 1,800 cyclists in our Meetup Group but we would be even more excited to have more of the group become dues paying SCU members.  Our membership fee is one of the best bargains around!!  So what are the benefits you will receive with your SCU membership you may ask?

Here are just a few:
  • Insurance coverage if an accident occurs while participating in a SCU ride
  • Access to all SCU events including the SCU picnic, awards banquet, tailgate parties and many more events that occur throughout the year
  • Discounts at designated local bike shops and SCU Century / Summer Event rides
  • Monthly newsletter
And most importantly...supporting our cycling community especially our experienced and dedicated ride leaders who work hard at providing our club members with the best and safest routes throughout the region that accommodates various rider abilities.

The SCU membership fees help to sustain our club so please consider becoming a member today!  To join our club, click https://suburbancyclists.org/.  Please feel free to reach out to me at membership@suburbancyclists.org or any of our Executive Committee if you have any questions or comments.

Hope to see you on the road!
