President's Message
President's Message November 2021

In November both the leaves and the temperatures drop. Although the fall colors are spectacular, the bare trees have a certain beauty and our expanded view into the landscape provides a change in scenery even on familiar roads. The colder temperatures will begin to demand more than just arm and leg warmers. But with thermal tights, extra layers and a good jacket it's possible to continue cycling until the roads begin to freeze. Pace yourself on the climbs to avoid getting too sweaty and consider this a time for a little Zen, taking in the fresh air and being one with your surroundings.

As you clear your mind you can reflect on your rides this past season. Think about the rides you've been on, whether they were with SCU, on organized event rides, bike travel tours, outings with friends, or on your own. How have you and your cycling been shaped or grown? Some growth may be in the form of performance gains, like achieving new distances or speeds. Other growth may be new types of terrain you have learned to navigate, such as gravel or off-road, and the confidence this builds. Or maybe your 'world view' has been shaped through cycling with friends, new and old, and the experience of riding to new places. More than likely you will find that you and your cycling will have evolved in a variety ways, some expected and some not. These new perspectives gained through reflection on your riding will make your cycling more fulfilling with each passing season.

Cranksgiving
2021 Cranksgiving Souderton

SCU is a proud sponsor of this year's Cranksgiving Souderton event on Saturday, November 13, starting at 9 am. The "food drive on two wheels" goes to nearby Landis supermarkets where riders buy food to be donated to the Keystone Opportunity Center's food pantry. Scooter's will transport the food from the supermarkets to the pantry -- their van does the heavy hauling while you enjoy the ride back to the start for a hot lunch at Jesse's BBQ. Distances and routes for all ages and abilities. See which of your fellow SCU'ers are going at Meetup, or register directly at BikeReg. Hope to see you there!

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures

SCU COVID-19 Mitigation Measures  - Updated May 13, 2021

The Covid situation has changed for the better in recent weeks. But we can't ignore the reality that the threat has not yet gone away completely. To reflect this change while remaining vigilant in protecting all members, the Executive Committee has adopted the new guidelines below. Keep in mind that your fellow riders may not have all been vaccinated, some by choice and others by circumstance. We should respect their privacy in this regard. In the absence of vaccination, social distancing and masking remain effective defenses against transmission. Therefore, we are asking all members to follow the new Guidelines to the best of their ability.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.
  • Please stay home or ride solo if you have any Covid symptoms, have tested positive for Covid, or have been recently exposed to someone that has Covid.
  • Bring a mask to wear when social distancing is not possible and for entry into commercial establishments at rest stops.
  • Recommended maximum group size is 15, but the ride leader may restrict groups to less.
  • If you develop Covid symptoms or test positive for Covid within a week of a group ride, please contact the club Ride Director (rides@suburbancyclists.org).
  • Maintain social distance as appropriate. Observe any applicable local, state and federal guidelines and comply with all county Health Department regulations.

  • Access to all SCU events including the SCU picnic, awards banquet, tailgate parties and many more events that occur throughout the year
  • Discounts at designated local bike shops and SCU Century / Summer Event rides
  • Monthly newsletter
And most importantly...supporting our cycling community especially our experienced and dedicated ride leaders who work hard at providing our club members with the best and safest routes throughout the region that accommodates various rider abilities.

All Members Welcome at Executive Committee Meetings

For 2021, Executive Committee meetings are held every second Thursday of the month and are posted to the Meetup ride calendar. All members are invited to participate in the discussions or share thoughts and ideas. In the past we have met at College Settlement Camp facilities, but due to Covid we are meeting via Zoom. If you RSVP to the Meetup or send an email to president@suburbancyclists.org, a Zoom link and an agenda will be sent to you shortly before the meeting. If you have something specific to share, you will be put at the top of the agenda so you can be heard without waiting through the routine business. Upcoming dates include November 11 and December 9.
